Without any doubt, Lodz can be called a city of festivals. World-famous designers and powerful fashion houses, such as: Kenzo, Prada or Gucci, as well as young fashion designers from Lodz meet twice a year during the biggest fashion event in the country – FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week Poland. Each year, the city hosts several cyclical events of international importance. Fotofestiwal – an International Festival of Photography awakes strong interest of critics, artists and the most important authorities. Celebrities take part in the festival Lodz Biennale, during which the contemporary art and its various forms of expression, such as: installations, sculpture, graphics and painting, are presented. Since 1991, the creators and enthusiasts of comic books have organized their meetings in the city. The programme of Międzynarodowy Festiwal Komiksu i Gier (International Festival of Comics and Games) is composed of drawing workshops and scenario workshops, as well as numerous exhibitions and meetings. Explorers Festival should be recommended to the fans of extreme sports, mountains and travel. Lodz became the center of tango in Poland, through the International Tango Festival. Triennale of Textiles is the most important and oldest event dedicated to the art of textiles in the world. During the Light Move Festival you can admire illuminated by color lights buildings and multimedia projections displayed on their walls.
Each year, the most famous events: Łódź Design Festival, Se-ma-for Film Festival, Festiwal Łódź Czterech Kultur (Lodz of Four Cultures Festival), Międzynarodowy Festiwal Producentów Muzycznych Soundedit (International Festival of Music Producers Soundedit), Festiwal Indywidualności Muzycznych Tansman (Festival of Music Individualities Tansman) or Międzynarodowy Festiwal Sztuk Przyjemnych i Nieprzyjemnych (International Festival of Pleasant and Unpleasant Plays) gather a large audience in Lodz.
Since the 50’s of the 20th century, the artistic life of the city has focused around Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Filmowa, Telewizyjna i Teatralna im. Leona Schillera (Leon Schiller Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School). The film school in Lodz educated the most prominent Polish directors, known throughout the world, including Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polański, Krzysztof Zanussi.
Today, the works of students from the popular “Filmówka” (film school) are also highly appreciated throughout the world. The film brand of Lodz is promoted with success by the studio Se-ma-for – producer of the Oscar-winning films “Tango” and “Piotruś i Wilk”. However, the festivals are the best complement of the city’s film traditions: Międzynarodowy Festiwal Szkół Filmowych i Telewizyjnych – Mediaschool (International Festival of Film and Television Schools – Mediaschool) and Festiwal Muzyki Filmowej (Festival of Film Music), organized by Muzeum Kinematografii (Museum of Cinematography) in Lodz.
